Nicole Latsia to defend PhD thesis on space weathering at LTU Space Campus

On 6 November 2026, Nicole Latsia, PhD student at Luleå University of Technology’s Space Campus in Kiruna, will defend her doctoral thesis on the effects of thermal space weathering on the surfaces of airless planetary bodies. The defense is open to participants both on site and online.

Nicole’s research contributes to a better understanding of the environments that spacecraft and scientific instruments may encounter during future space missions. Understanding how planetary surfaces change under extreme conditions is an important part of preparing for future space exploration.

Research and education strengthen the space sector

Students and early-career researchers play an essential role in shaping the future of the space sector. Their knowledge, curiosity and new perspectives help drive innovation, strengthen research environments and build the expertise that the industry will need in the years ahead.

At Space Sweden North, we recognise the importance of connecting research, education and industry to support a strong and growing space ecosystem in northern Sweden.

Nicole’s upcoming PhD defense is an opportunity to highlight the research being carried out at LTU Space Campus and the importance of supporting the next generation of researchers and space professionals.
